Michael Jackson

Smile and Lyrics

Smile is a song that was originally composed by English comic actor Charlie Chaplin. He composed Smile for the film Modern Times (1936). In a 1950's revival of the film, Lyrics were added to the song by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons, and the original Composition of Smile and its Lyrics were famously sung by Nat King Cole.
In 1995 Michael Jackson recorded "Smile" for his double album HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I. It was planned to be released as the eighth and final Single from the album in 1997 but was canceled days before its release date. During Michael Jackson's memorial service, his friend Brooke Shields mentioned that "Smile" had been his favorite song, and later in the memorial service it was sung by Michael's brother Jermaine Jackson. In the lyrics, the singer is telling the listener to cheer up and that there is always a bright tomorrow, just as long as they smile.

Smile Lyrics

Smile, though your heart is aching
Smile, even though it's breaking
When there are clouds in the sky
You'll get by...

If you smile
With your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just...

Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just...

Smile, though your heart is aching
Smile, even though it's breaking
When there are clouds in the sky
You'll get by...

If you smile
Through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile...

That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile

Charlie Chaplin's Original Version of Smile

This was an instrumental theme composed by Charlie Chaplin, and used in the soundtrack for the 1936 Charlie Chaplin movie Modern Times. Here is a clip from the movie.

1954 - Lyrics are added to Smile

John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons added the lyrics and title to Smile in 1954. The song was then first sung by Nat King Cole in 1954. It was also covered by Cole's daughter, Natalie, on her 1991 album, Unforgettable...With Love.
